Duck University to offer music classes

At Duck University, the halls are alive with the sound of music.

Third, forth and fifth-grade students attending Duck University began music classes Thursday.

Students will learn to read music and develop the physical skills necessary to play recorders now and hopefully give them a leg up when it comes to sixth grade band.

The Prince of Peace/Immanuel Lutheran parish began a music outreach program to the Taylor Community last year. This year they blended their gifts with the desires of the students and teachers to come up with an after school music program.

The parish is providing, at no charge to either the school or the youth, instruments for each student.

When class is over, the instruments are sterilized in the lunch room and made ready for the next week's class.

The Rev. Jack Bohls, pastor at the church, has his bachelor's degree in music education.

Before going to work for United Technology Labs in Dallas, Bohls was a high school band director for eight years, primarily in the north Dallas Area. When he walks into the classroom at Duck University, he is no longer Pastor Jack, but simply PJ, he said.

"I am here to teach young children music, period. It's the parents job to teach the values they want their children to live by. I am here to help them learn how to turn half notes and quarter notes into music, and have fun while they do it," Bohls said.
