Duck University off to good start
Duck University has had a successful first year. The number of students in grades Kindergarten through eighth who have participated in the grant funded program has far exceeded original predictions. The students have spent afternoons in tutoring and homework sessions that are led by classroom teachers, YMCA staff and numerous volunteers. After schoolwork time, students spend time with the YMCA staff discussing various character assets. The focus of this is the 40 Developmental Assets. The 40 Developmental Assets are concrete, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to becoming a successful young person. These assets have the power during critical adolescent years to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. The next phase is the highlight of the afternoon - electives! During this hour students participate in their choice of activities. The activities range from athletic, with the favorite being Goofy Track and Crazy Relays, to cooking, computer, arts and crafts, etc. Community volunteers, along with the YMCA staff teach the electives.
