The Taylor Merchants Association's third annual “Love is in the Air” Valentine event came off without a hitch, according to TMA President Cherri Wolbrueck. Participants enjoyed dinner at one of three downtown locations - Gourmet Country Café, Ricoco's Latin Grill and the Flying Spur Gallery (catered by Always Entertaining). Each woman received a long-stem red rose from Taylor Floral Company. Couples enjoyed a carriage ride around downtown in a flower-draped carriage from Dakotah's Dream Team Carriage Company of Elgin. Couples also had a professional portrait taken by A Moment in Time Photography. Each couple received chocolates from Sciortino's Emporium and on the back of each chocolate wrapper there was a scratch-off game disc. The big winner of the evening was Rachel Gratehouse of Taylor, who won a diamond and silver triple-heart pendant from Bland's Jewelry valued at $750. The grand prize was paid for with donations from City National, Citizen's National and First State banks. Wolbrueck said local businesses donated prizes totaling almost $2,000 to the event. TMA also extends a special thank you to Lone Star Linen Service for providing the tablecloths and napkins for the event, and to Cole Reed of The Howard Theatre for showing the movie, “An Affair to Remember.” Proceeds from the event will enable TMA to work on projects that promote local businesses, especially those downtown. “The big franchises have corporate backing, national advertising and name recognition going for them, which is a huge advantage. The small ‘mom and pop' stores like us rely on each other to bring our businesses to the attention of the public,” she said. Future plans include TMA's participation in Taylor's Bloomin' Festival on May 5th. “We have volunteered to coordinate the children's activities in conjunction with the Taylor Main Street Program,” Wolbrueck said.
