The Taylor Rotary Club hosted a banquet Thursday for several outstanding Taylor High School students and their guests.

The club honored the top 12 percent of the Class of 2007 as Rotary Scholars and presented other awards.

Keynote speaker for the event was Austin American-Statesman columnist and THS alumni Kirk Bohls.

Bohls encouraged students to read and write as much as they can, to remain open minded and to remain committed to academics. He also encouraged graduates to “start giving back right now,” to connect with the world and take up causes that are important to them.

He also said they should not let fear of a new environment stop them from getting the most out of college.

“Everybody's scared to death, but you don't have to show it and it doesn't have to hinder you,” he said.

Bohls also announced that he and his family are awarding a new $3,000 scholarship in honor of their father, Leon Bohls.

Two scholarship recipients were introduced during the banquet. Devenia Gonzales received a $1,000 Rotary Vocational Scholarship, which was funded by Babeco. Bryce Block received the $3,000 Bunnell-Rotary Academic Scholarship.
