Former Thrall High School student Chase Erwin received an interesting opportunity recently as he was asked to design a set for the Lamar University campus television station in Beaumont.

Erwin, who is currently taking a hiatus from his double-major in English and digital design, has practiced making sets for television programs since he was a small boy and said the opportunity to make this set has been a dream come true.

“It's exhilarating to produce something that's actually going to be seen every day on television. I've been making my own set designs and TV news graphics since my elementary school days. I specifically remember loving the novelty of KEYE-TV 42's set and newsroom and how I would cut up old cases of soda and boxes, flip over to the brown side and replicate the KEYE logo all over the place. I even took the boxes and built a ‘set' from them,” Erwin said.

Erwin also stated that inspiration for the set design came from an array of photos, that were given to him by a friend who had recently graduated from Lamar University.

After deciding to look for the most aesthetically pleasing photos and use them as a backdrop, Erwin mixed the photos together with both university logos and a picture of the school mascot to form a collage. He also said that he recently received word from a friend that that the TV station's producer was in awe of the finished product, which was better far than anyone had anticipated.

Erwin, who said that he hopes to make a career out of graphic design for television, is hoping that this will be a precursor for things to come.
