Local schools finish strong at area By Emily Grobe Regional qualifying finishes by athletes from Granger, Thrall and Thorndale high schools in boys and girls track highlighted the Area Track Meet in Thrall Wednesday. The Granger Lions clinched the area championship with 77 points - a seven point advantage over second place Thrall. “It came down to the last race with three teams in the hunt,” Granger coach Allen Dews said. “It is exciting every time we go onto the track. That's how it's supposed to be and why people stay until the end.” All three schools will advance athletes to the Regional Meet in Huntsville April 25-26. The top four finishers in each event qualified to advance. Together with a first-place finish by Kenny Sifuentes and qualifying finishes from Christian Kerlin, Clay Mazoch, Pedro Juarez and the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay teams, Granger won 11 events and qualified in eight events for the regional meet. “I am very proud of these guys and how they compete, but even more, I am proud of the kind of men they are developing into,” Dews said. The Thrall Tigers took second with 70 points behind freshman Zac Candelas' first-place wins in the 1600 and 3200-m runs. Homer Jackson finished first in the triple jump for three Thrall titles. Dandy East, Jared Newman, LeMar Williams and the Tiger 4x200 and 4x400-meter quartets also qualified for regionals. Thorndale finished fifth with 53 points after Cody Schneider won the 300-m hurdles, and the 4x100 and 4x200-meter realy teams took titles. Justin Browning also qualified for regionals. The Lady Dogs finished third overall in the girls division with 80 points and will be represented at the regional meet by Morgan and Lindsey Youngblood, Mirah Knapek, Latisha Hall and three relay teams. The Tigerettes took fifth with 53 points and earned two titles with Shelbi Hubnik's first-place finish in the girls 300-m hurdles and the 4x100-m relay team's win. Christian Daniels and the 4x200-m relay teams also qualified for regionals. Regionals qualifiers will compete at Sam Houston State University. Here are the results from the area meet.
