District puzzle remains unsolved By Emily Grobe It’s official. The Duck baseball team is in a tie in District 18-3A. Whether it will be a three-way tie for first, or simply a tie with Hutto for second will be determined tonight. Monday, Hutto defeated Cameron 4-3 in what proved to be a exciting win that almost saw the Yoemen come back. Cameron finished 1-7 in district, while Hutto fininshes alongside Taylor at 5-3. Tonight Liberty Hill will host Rockdale in a game that will not only determine first place in district, but it will determine who gets a bye in district, who takes on District 17-3A and who faces 20-3A. The runner-up from our district will have to battle past third place from District 17-3A. Lorena is currently in second in that district with a 6-3 record, but is facing China Spring, which is in a third-place tie with Gatesville at 5-4. Gatesville is set to take on Waco Connally, which sits in fifth at 2-7. A China Spring win over the Leopards will tie the two in second. A Gatesville win over Connally will force a three-way tie for second, while a loss would move them to fourth — knocking them out of playoff contention. The third place team from our district will face the runner up from District 17-3A, which, again, could be one of three teams. We will have to wait and see. If our runner-up makes it past bi-district, it will take on Robinson in the area round. Robinson has clinched the District 17-3A championship and is set to play last place Waco La Vega tonight. Currently 8-1 in district, Robinson lost two to Lufkin Hudson in the area round last year. If our third place team wins the bi-district round, they will advance to area and face the winner of District 20-3A. Lufkin Hudson and Carthage are tied for first at 12-1 in that district and are both slated to play lower-rung teams tonight. Carthage defeated Cameron Yoe 11-1 in the area round last year and knocked out our very own Taylor 10-0 in the regional quarterfinals. They went on to lose two out of three in the regional semis. Lufkin Hudson also ended its season last year in the regional semifinals. So as we wait a little longer, we can rest assured knowing our top three teams are Taylor, Hutto and Liberty Hill — just not necessarily in that order.
