By JASON SCHAEFER Cars have lined the streets of Taylor during the Bloomin’ Festival in years past, but have never before included Corvettes. On Saturday, the Longhorn Corvette Club will display their sports cars along Main Street in front of the old city hall and Heritage Square, joined by other classic automobiles. Half a dozen classic cars from the Georgetown Car Club will join the ‘vettes, along with a “souped-up” truck owned by Taylor resident Brandon Naivar, was featured in Truckin’ magazine with the truck. Residents attending the festival can get an up-close look at the cars throughout the day. “Everybody likes to see old cars,” Main Street Coordinator Jean Johnson said. “The P.T. Cruisers were great fun last year, but we want to give people something new to look at and experience. Maybe next year we’ll have something different to keep it interesting.” The Corvette line dates back to 1953, and the name has interesting origins, according to Chevrolet’s Web site. The Chevrolet company searched through a list of 300 submissions for names beginning with the letter “C” for a new sports car, and found nothing acceptable. Later, an assistant director for the public relations department searched through “C” entries in the dictionary and found the definition of corvette — “a speedy pursuit ship in the British navy” — and the name for America’s sports car stuck.”
