Rotary Club honors THS scholars

The Taylor Rotary Club held its annual Rotary Scholars banquet Thursday, honoring Taylor High School students and a teacher for outstanding performance.

The guest speaker for the event was Craig Naivar, a 1991 THS graduate who played quarterback for the Ducks and is now defensive coordinator at Rice University. Naivar encouraged the college-bound seniors to approach life with effort and positive attitude —the things within their control.

Another THS graduate honored during the event was Dawn Fischer, who was selected by students as the Distinguished Educator of the Year. After graduating from THS, Fischer attended Texas A&M University.

Students described her as extremely intuitive and in compassionate, dedicated to teaching and widely respected because of her commitment to her students.

Students honored for academic achievement during the banquet were:

Nickolas Abbott, who will attend Baylor University. Abbott was also named Outstanding Male Extracurricular Student for his involvement in a number of activities including THS band, which he served as drum major, the Academic Decathlon team and National Honor Society. He also received the $3,000 Bunnell-Rotary Academic Scholarship for his academic achievement and extensive volunteer service.

Rebecca Almazan, who will attend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Kimberly Amado, who will attend Baylor University.

Stacy Bubenik, who will attend UT-Austin.

Britton Byfield, who will attend UT-Austin.

Lauren Connors, who will attend either Blinn College or Kilgore College.

Noah Corn, who will attend St. Edwards University.

Jessica Dale, who will attend Columbia University.

Jasmin Estrada, who will attend UT-Austin.

Pearlie Gault, who will attend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Keegan Gross, who will attend Texas State University-San Marcos.

Reese Hall, who will attend Temple College.

Frances Hewtty, who will attend Hardin-Simmons University.

Jordan Humphreys, who will attend UT-Austin.

Travis Hyzak, who will attend the University of North Texas.

Ashley Lantzsch, who will attend Texas Tech University.

Rachel Lewis, who will attend Texas State University-San Marcos.

Matt Lozano, who will attend Baylor University.

Kayla Marek, who will attend Texas A&M.

Priscilla Martinez, a three-year graduate who will attend Texas A&M.

Rudy Mikeska, who will attend UT-Austin.

Dylan Moerbe, who will attend the University of Houston.

Jacqueline Orozco, who will attend UT-Austin.

Cullen Pick, who will attend UT-Austin.

Sydney Savage, who will attend Baylor University.

Other students recognized during the banquet included:

Brittni Gola, who was named Outstanding Female Extracurricular Student. She was recognized for participation in a number of athletic and academic programs, including THS volleyball, tennis and softball and the National Honor Society.

Bryant Cigales, who received a $1,000 Rotary Vocational Scholarship sponsored by BABECO. Cigales plans to study automotive engineering at Universal Technical Institute in Houston.

Devyn Tone, who has been selected for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, a leadership development program that includes intensive training during a week-long retreat in Bastrop.
