Ducks set to face Hudson in area

The Taylor Ducks knocked out 26 hits in two games in the bi-district round of the Class 3A state playoffs. They will need to keep it up if they hope to continue their playoff run.

Taylor is taking on Lufkin Hudson in the area round of the playoffs in a best of three series starting tonight.

Hudson, which won a tie-breaker for first, earned a first round bye out of District 20-3A. They finished 13-1 in district and played Carthage to determine first and second seeds. Last season the Hornets advanced to the regional semifinals, where they were beaten in two games.

Lufkin Hudson hits the ball really well, Taylor coach Doug Kuhl said. The Hornets offense will be key in their game strategy.

In 12 of its last 17 games, Hudson has scored 10 or more runs, run-ruling eight opponents.

But the Taylor offense has produced a number of homeruns in its last two games and is working with a level of confidence they haven’t had since early in the season.

Eric Brooks is back from injury and Jordan Stefek has pitched a number of stellar games. Dalton Marek and Eric Camacho have also shown their ability to man the mound if necessary.

Heath O’Banon, who moved up from JV, has done a tremendous defensive job as second base, while third baseman Sam Jirasek has had a great showing at the plate, hitting a home run and five RBIs in game one against Lorena.

Game one of the area series will be played in Lufkin tonight at 8:30 p.m. Game two will be in Taylor Saturday at 1 p.m. If necessary, game three will be 30 minutes after game two.
