Cub Scouts day camps keep packs active

Cub Scouts will have several opportunities to stay busy this summer and experience nature and the scouting world at a number of camps.

The Boy Scouts of America organization will host several camping options, including a dozen different day camps in and around the area, and a special Scout Night at the Dell Diamond for local Cub Scouts.

Day camps, which are still open for registration, are designed to keep the boys active and “doing,” according to the BSA Web site. Activities, which usually include team-oriented games, are used to teach children “citizenship training, character development and personal fitness.”

Cost ranges from $90 to $100 and includes activities such as archery, BB shooting, games, swimming and crafts, among others.

The Blackland Prairie Twilight Camp serves the scouts in the Taylor district and is law enforcement oriented. It will be held June 26-27 from 4:30 to 9 p.m. and June 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Heritage Park in Pflugerville. A SWAT team will display their gear and vehicles for the scouts and there will be a police dog demonstration.

“To top it off, we will be doing rockets,” Cubmaster Staci Kilpatrick said of the three-day camp.

Scout Night at the Dell Diamond is another local activity for scouts. Held in Round Rock July 29, scouts stay overnight at the baseball field and will be able to play basketball, rock climb, swim and watch a movie on the video board at the stadium after the Express game.

“We go and parade around the field, stay for the game and then spend the night on the field,” Kilpatrick said. “It is mucho fun for the boys.”

Registration costs $19 for scouts staying overnight, or $6 for cubs attending the game only.

There are several other day, summer and resident camping options for cub and boy scouts throughout the summer. Members may check with their local den leader for information.
