Water-borne workouts

Jump into aqua aerobics at Robinson Pool tonight

The Robinson pool will be home to a new kind of work out beginning tonight.

The Taylor Family YMCA will hold water aerobics at the pool Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 21.

The program uses advanced and deep water techniques to increase calories burned and help with lean muscle development.

Water aerobics is beneficial for a number of participants — especially elderly and pregnant women — and it helps strengthen arms, legs and body muscles with the use of water resistance. It uses the help of water to get the same benefits as regular aerobics.

Water aerobics mixes walking, running and weight training with different depths of water to help participants develop a beneficial workout routine.

Water aerobics is also shown to burn calories more efficiently than doing the same exercises on land or in a gym.

According to the Web site Diabeticlifestyle.com, deep water walking burns 264 calories — nearly double that of land walking. Deep water jogging burns 100 more calories than the same routine around a track.

Among its many benefits, water aerobics helps participants stay cool during the hot summer evenings and still accomplish their exercise goals. People interested in signing up can do so at the YMCA Member Services desk or call (512) 365-9622 for more information.
