Don’t wait to vaccinate

The end of summer is just around the corner and that means it is time to think about “back to school immunizations.”

The Williamson County and Cities Health District encourages caregivers to contact their child’s primary health care provider to ensure all immunizations are up-to-date.

Generally, small children need immunizations at two months, four months, six months, 12 months, 18 months and four years.

Vaccines have been available for many years to prevent diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough). There are also vaccines to prevent such diseases as varicella (chicken pox), hepatitis A and B and human papillomavirus (HPV).

If your child needs immunizations, WCCHD encourages you to call your health care provider and make an appointment now to avoid the back-to-school rush. Remember to take all paper vaccine records you have to your child’s health care provider.

WCCHD clinics in Cedar Park, Georgetown, Round Rock, and Taylor provide walk-in immunizations and immunizations by appointment if you are unable to get immunizations through your health care provider.

The WCCHD will be modifying its normal “walk-in” immunization clinic schedule between Aug. 4-22 to help meet the demands of this busy time of the year.

The immunization requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade for the 2008-2009 school year are posted on the Texas Department of State Health Services immunization Web site at http://www.dsh?s.state.tx.us/region7/documents/ImmunizationRequirementsquickref08-09.pdf.
