12 Tigers, 10 Lions receive recognition

Granger may have made the playoffs over the Thrall Tigers, but on the All-District 26-1A team, Thrall holds a 12-10 advantage.

A dozen Tigers, including seven players who will return for next season, received spots on the all-district squad, including two players — Hayden Caffey and Javier Hernandez — who received multiple nods.

Caffey, a sophomore, was selected to the second team as both a running back and defensive back. Hernandez, a junior, earned first team defensive line, second team offensive line and second team punter honors.

Also winning first team honors were junior Matt Loza on the offensive line, junior Lawrence Aleman at linebackers and senior Michael Rus in the secondary.

A trio of Tigers — junior Brandon Stautz and seniors Kollen Scruggs and Trevor Scanlon, made the second team defensive line. Senior Frankie Valdez made the second team as a linebacker.

Bill Dodson, a junior wide receiver and Kerry Johle, a senior tight end, also made the second team, along with freshman punter Josh Miller.

Granger sophomore Andrew Aleman started the season on the JV, but finished as the district’s newcomer of the year.

Granger had five players receive two all-district awards. Senior Robbie Filla was voted a first team running back and linebacker and junior Jason Finn made the first team as a wide receiver and the second team as a defensive back.

Dawson Weaver earned first team spots on both the offensive and defensive line. Chaston Kubacak also made the first team defensive line and was also a unanimous choice as first team tight end.

Cole Helfrich earned second team running back and defensive line accolades.

Senior Kenny Sifuentes earned a spot in the first-team secondary and junior Buck Outlaw was selected a first team offensive lineman.

Kevin Whatley and Heston Luersen made the second team, Whatley on the offensive line and Luersen the defensive line.

District champion Bartlett had the most all-district selections with 18, followed by 17 from Thorndale.

Trailing Granger and Thrall were Milano with nine and Holland with eight.
