Taylor girl killed in wreck

Meagan Renee Oviedo, a 19-year-old Taylor resident, was killed Sunday night when the vehicle she was riding in struck a tree near Bastrop. At about 8:15 p.m., Arturo Bergara-Lopez, 24, was driving with Oviedo in a 1990 Dodge Caravan, heading eastbound on Old McDade Road on the north side of Bastrop, about one-tenth of a mile west of Jean Scott Road. According to Tela Mange, spokesperson with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when Bergara-Lopez lost control and ran off the westbound side of the roadway and struck a tree. Neither Bergara-Lopez nor Oviedo was wearing a seat belt. A justice of the peace pronounced Oviedo dead at the scene at around 9:15 p.m. Bergara-Lopez was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge for injuries. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
