The Mega Millions jackpot, the third largest in US history, hit $1.28 billion Friday night. A ticket purchased in Illinois is good for the first prize, according to CNN, an American channel based on the state’s lottery.
The previous Mega Millions winner has been since mid-April. Since then, the jackpot has reached $1.28 billion or 1.25 billion euros. According to CNN, the winner can choose to pay their winnings in a lump sum, but that’s only $742 million. If he wants the full amount, it will be spread over 29 annual payments.
The $1.28 billion is the third-highest lottery win ever in the U.S. and the second-highest among Mega Millions. The largest lottery prize ever won in the United States was $1.586 billion in 2016 Powerball. Winnings to be split between three winners. The highest amount in Mega Millions is more than $1.53 billion, which went to a South Carolina native in 2018.
More details about the winner are not yet known. “We look forward to congratulating him or her,” said Mega Millions Federation director Pat McDonald. Friday night’s winning numbers are 13, 36, 45, 57, 67 and a mega ball of 14.
In addition to the first prize, there are 26 Americans who are at least $1 million richer because they picked five correct numbers.
The odds of winning this jackpot are one in 302,575,350.
