771 million euros, budget for Beleris 2023-2024

771 million euros, budget for Beleris 2023-2024

The Federal Government and the Government of Brussels have announced that they have ratified Law No. 15. This is the program of the Beliris Initiative for the development of Brussels as a national and international capital. Alimony was awarded at 279 million euros for the years 2023 and 2024 combined. Combined with the amount carried over from previous years, this brings the available budget to €771 million.

Budgets are divided into five main areas. Of the current €771 million, €259 million has been allocated to mobility projects. 180 and 168 million euros are earmarked, respectively, for urban renewal and the renewal of cultural and sports infrastructure. 71 million euros will be invested in (re)building green and public spaces and 22 million euros will be invested in the infrastructure of the economy and education. Finally, there is another €71 million for fixed operating costs.

absorption of inflation

Bijakte15 is firmly committed to the continuity of existing projects. Many of them have been allocated extra budgets, mainly to pay for inflation. It concerns the extension of metro line 3 to the north of Brussels, the development of the Veloplus network with cyclostrades along the railway lines, the redevelopment of Place Schuman (and other important traffic junctions to make public spaces more pleasant and greener and to encourage more space for active road users), and the realization of contracts for neighborhood renewal and various urbanizations, the development of priority areas such as Biestebroek and Reyers, and the regeneration of social housing (such as that on Linde Street in Schaerbeek). There is also the restoration/refurbishment of the Muntschouwburg Museum, the Brussels Conservatory and the Belgian Jewish Museum. Finally, also among the projects are the restoration of the Forest Park, the Cinquantenaire Park, the Duden and Jupiter parks, the construction of the Allée du Kaai park on the Materialen and Beco docks, the Neerpede recreational field and the environmental product in Zoniënwoud which received an additional budget.

Fifteen new projects

In the center of Brussels, 4,800 square meters of the canal will be used as a swimming area. Beliris contributes €1.1 million to the studies for this project, which has been called Becobad. In addition, a regional sports hall will be built in Rederskaai in Vergotedok (for local use and for regional and national competitions). On the cultural level, the renovation of the museums in the Cinquantenaire Park, the improvement of the rehearsal room of the Belgian National Orchestra (Benefit), the Coudenberg Palace and the Heysel Palace are on the agenda. Several main streets can also look forward to a change: Luttrebruglaan, Mededingingsstraat, René Henrystraat, Leuvensesteenweg and the roads around Ter Kamerenbos. Another important renovation project is the Place du Luxembourg. The aim is to return this neoclassical square to its function as a place of relaxation and to create a harmonious space in which each road user has its place, while respecting this Brussels heritage. Beliris will also have a feasibility study done for a bicycle and pedestrian connection between Luxembourg Station and Schuman Station along the railway line, the so-called Highlane. Finally, Belgium will have its first pediatric research institute: the Brussels Pediatric Research Institute (BRIP).
