A car passes a police checkpoint in Vatican City: Terror alert briefly declared | Abroad

Vatican security forces briefly activated a state of terror alert on Sunday after a car drove past a police checkpoint near St Peter’s Square.

The 39-year-old driver did not stop at a checkpoint near the square on Sunday morning. Italian media reported that this led to a short chase in which an officer fired at the wheels of the car. When the car stopped, the police arrested the driver using an electric taser.

According to Corriere della Sera newspaper, the manhunt took place in a neighborhood populated by many tourists who head to the Vatican for the weekly Angelus Prayer on Sunday afternoon.

Il Messaggero knows that a terror alert was briefly triggered in the Vatican. The newspaper said that the security forces of the Swiss Guard temporarily closed the gate to the Vatican when a shot was fired.
