The earthquake occurred at 4:08 am local time (2:08 am Belgian time) in Duzce County, at a depth of ten meters. According to the Turkish Civil Protection, the shock had a magnitude of 5.9, while the American Geophysical Institute had a magnitude of 6.1.

The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks and was felt 200 kilometers away, in Istanbul, a city of 16 million people, and in the Turkish capital, Ankara. Panic reigned among the residents, but no deaths or major damage to buildings have been reported at the moment. The authorities urged everyone to remain calm.

tectonic plates

Numerous tectonic plates border each other on the territory of Turkey. In November 1999, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake killed about 900 people, also in Duzce. In September of the same year, a strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake claimed the lives of more than 17,000 people in the area around the industrial city of Izmit, about 130 kilometers away. An earthquake in Izmir in October 2020 killed more than a hundred people.

Experts also expect a strong earthquake to occur in the near future in Istanbul, which is home to about 16 million people.
