A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey early this morning. Several people were injured as a result. Turkey’s official broadcaster TRT said the number of injured has now risen to 80. The epicenter of the quake was in the Black Sea province of Duzce, about 200 kilometers from the Turkish capital, Ankara, and Istanbul. Earthquakes were felt in both cities. The earthquake was followed by many aftershocks – more than 100 according to the Turkish Disaster Management Agency – and was felt even some 200 kilometers away, in the 16 million inhabitants of Istanbul and in the Turkish capital, Ankara. Panic reigned among the population. No fatalities have been reported yet, but dozens have been injured.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu reported that at least one person was seriously injured. He was going to jump off the balcony in a panic. According to the minister, there has been no news of buildings collapsing. However, more than 8,000 buildings were examined for damage.

Today, schools are closed in Duzce and Sakarya provinces. The National Disaster Agency reports that there is a power outage in Duzce, and is urging residents to remain calm.

tectonic plates

Numerous tectonic plates border each other under the territory of Turkey. In November 1999, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake killed about 900 people, also in Duzce. In September of the same year, a strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake killed more than 17,000 people in the area around the industrial city of Izmit, about 130 kilometers to the west. An earthquake in Izmir in October 2020 killed more than a hundred people.

Experts also predict that a strong earthquake will hit Istanbul in the near future.
