Mayor Yvonne Aki Sawyer said in a statement on Facebook that she was “saddened to learn of the explosion along Bay Bureh Road in Wellington”. Aki Sawyer adds that the accident occurred after the tanker collided with another truck.
In her Facebook post, the mayor spoke of unconfirmed reports of more than 100 deaths. She added that the pictures of the explosion, which were circulated on social media, were “terrifying.”
