Northwestern Iran, not far from the border with Turkey, was rocked on Saturday evening by a strong earthquake, killing at least two people. According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale. Local media, as well as the USGS institute, spoke of 5.9 at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Buildings were damaged in dozens of cities. At least 440 people were injured.
Rescue teams are on their way to the affected area, and nearby hospitals have been alerted. Helping can become more difficult due to the wintry weather. It snows in many places in the region and the temperature drops below zero at night. The electricity was cut off here and there.
Last week, 120 people were injured in an earthquake in northwest Iran.
