And researchers have developed ways to find bacteria linked to severe prostate cancers.
Dr Rachel Hurst, from the research group, said: “To discover the bacteria, we used many different approaches, including whole genome sequencing of tissue samples, a method increasingly used as we move into the era of genetic medicine.” UEA and lead author of the study.
“When the tumor samples are arranged, the DNA of the pathogens present is also sequenced, making it possible to detect the bacteria,” she said. “We found several types of bacteria that were associated with aggressive prostate cancer, and some were new species that had not been found before.” In total, five types of bacteria were used, three of which are new.
Two of the three new bacterial species the team found are named after the study’s sponsors: Porphyromonas puppyto The Bob Champion Cancer Trust, and Varibaculum Prostate Cancer UKProstate cancer in the UK.
Among the group of bacteria found by the team Anaerobic, Peptonephilus, Porphyromonas, Phenularia And spindle† These are all anaerobic bacteria, which means they like to grow without the presence of oxygen.
“If one of these specific anaerobic bacteria was found in patient samples, it was associated with having a worse stage of prostate cancer and faster progression of aggressive disease,” Hurst said. “We have also identified potential biological mechanisms that may explain how these bacteria are related to cancer.”
Men who found one or more of these five bacteria in their urine, prostate, or tumor tissue were 2.6 times more likely to develop early-stage prostate cancer to advanced disease than men who had none of the bacteria found.
