China ‘manipulated’ the weather to create clear skies for political celebrations | Abroad

Investigators say Chinese authorities manipulated the weather to make it clear and dry during the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party.

On July 1, large celebrations were held in honor of the Communist Party, in which tens of thousands of people took part. According to a research paper from Tsinghua University, Beijing used a technique called cloud seeding to achieve clear skies.

It is said that the authorities released chemicals into the air and then rained it down so the weather was dry and a little smoggy during the festivities.

The paper, which has already been reviewed by other academics and published in the scientific journal Environmental Science, revealed that a two-hour cloud seeding was triggered on the eve of the festivities. Residents in nearby mountainous areas reported seeing rockets fired on June 30.

The South China Morning Post wrote based on the results of the investigation that the missiles then released silver iodide into the air to stimulate precipitation, and that the intervention caused a significant and temporary reduction in air pollution.

The research team concluded that artificial rain was the “only anomaly during this period”, so it is unlikely that the drop in pollution was due to natural causes.

The Chinese government is an ardent supporter of this technology and has already spent billions to manipulate the weather so that agricultural areas are protected or important events have better weather.
