The Turkish president described his rival Kilicdaroglu as a “drunkard”. The country’s parliamentary and presidential elections will be held on Sunday, May 14. In that decisive confrontation, Recep Tayyip Erdogan may lose power after 20 years.
“The Turkish people will not leave the country to drunks,” she said at an election rally in Istanbul attended by hundreds of thousands of supporters. Erdogan again accused Kilicdaroglu, who is running for six opposition parties, of collaborating with “terrorists”. Opinion polls indicate a volatile race between Erdogan and the opposition leader.
Meanwhile, the authorities are said to have tried to spoil the campaign of the anti-Erdogan mayor of Istanbul. According to Twitter reports, opponents threw stones and Mayor Imamoglu had to cut short his speech in Erzurum (eastern Turkey; ed.). He belongs to the main opposition Republican People’s Party and will become vice president if he wins the elections.
