Utah has become the first US state to severely restrict the use of TikTok and Instagram by children and teenagers. Access to this App is prohibited without the express consent of minors’ parents or guardians. Governor Spence J. Cox signed the legislation Thursday.

This is the first state law in the United States to prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from using social media without the express permission of a parent or guardian. The new measure also ensures that parents in Utah can access posts, messages and replies from their children. Additionally, minors cannot access social media accounts between 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., making it the default setting that only a parent or guardian can change.
Governor Cox signed a second bill Thursday that would prohibit social media companies from using features or design techniques that could make a minor “addicted” to their online sites. The Utah actions come amid public concern about the powerful social media mechanisms that can drive young people to spend hours online.
