Two former German soldiers were arrested on suspicion of founding a paramilitary organization. According to the prosecutor, the two wanted to create their own army of one hundred to one hundred and fifty people. The Germans wanted to join the war in Yemen with their army.
German media reported that the two suspects promised other members a monthly salary of 40,000 euros. They hoped that another party would provide funding and pinned their hopes on Saudi Arabia. This country is deeply involved in the Yemeni civil war.
The men wanted to end the war with their army and thus facilitate negotiations between the rebels and the government in Yemen. Prosecutors say the soldiers knew they would have to kill people to do so.
The prosecutor said that after the battle in Yemen, the former soldiers wanted to continue organizing and making themselves mercenaries.
