The United Nations fears that about 4 million Ukrainians will flee abroad if the situation does not improve.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said on Sunday that the EU is also preparing for a massive influx of Ukrainian refugees. “I think we have to prepare for the millions,” she told reporters in Brussels. Johansson said he supports the activation of the EU’s temporary protection directive to provide shelter for people coming to the EU.

Most Ukrainians move to Poland. Polish border guards said more than 196,000 people have crossed the border from Ukraine since Thursday. Saturday there were 77,300. This is not only a new record, but also more than Poland can already handle. The country can receive up to 50,000 refugees per day at the border with Ukraine. Before the Russian invasion, about 1.5 million Ukrainians were in Poland.

An estimated 71,000 people arrived in Hungary. There are 70,000 people in Moldova and 47,000 in Romania. People are also on the run within Ukraine itself. According to the United Nations, there are now 160,000. The UN figures are based on those of countries hosting refugees.
