Russia’s parliament, the State Duma, had already passed the new laws ten days earlier. In addition to life imprisonment for high treason, prison sentences were increased for other crimes. For example, the maximum sentence for vandalism will be increased from fifteen to twenty years in prison. Opponents of the war in Ukraine, who destroyed railways to prevent the transfer of arms, for example, now risk twenty years in prison.
The maximum penalty for “international terrorism” will be increased from ten to twelve years, and the minimum penalty for complicity in such a situation will be raised from five to seven years.
In addition, Putin also signed a law criminalizing “assistance and complicity in implementing decisions of international organizations in which Russia or foreign government bodies do not participate.” The suspects risk a fine of up to 1 million rubles (about 11,000 euros) or five years in prison.
Recently, the International Criminal Court’s decision to prosecute Putin caused outrage in Moscow. Moscow also considers Western sanctions imposed as a result of the Russian war in Ukraine illegal.
