Lithuania sets up surveillance cameras along the border with Belarus in response to the migrant crisis that peaked in November. Currently, about half of the borders are equipped with cameras.
The project will cost about 40 million euros. Prime Minister Ingrida Simonet said cameras are cheaper than physical barriers, according to BNS news agency.
Neighboring Poland began building a border wall near Belarus last week to replace the temporary fence. The border wall will cost Poland 353 million dollars.
Belarus announced in May that it would not prevent migrants from traveling to the European Union, likely in response to EU sanctions. In the following months, thousands of migrants attempted to enter the European Union from Belarus via Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. The flow of immigrants fell sharply after those three countries strengthened their borders.
