Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy review – based on the 2008 comic series

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most surprising and funniest games we’ve played this year. The Guardians takes you on a fantastic adventure filled with fun twists and turns, battles on exotic planets, delicious 80’s rocks and ‘space metal’. There are quite a few things to like about the game. For example, you will have to get used to this version of Peter Quill, the camera does not always work well and the fight is repeated a little after a while, but this hardly spoils the fun. Due to the excellent development of the characters and the excellent acting behind them, the game knows how to captivate from start to finish. It’s great that the casual conversations between Guardians are still fun after more than ten hours of gameplay and that at that time there is still a lot of new material passing by, which is also of a high standard. Experienced players have saved the universe countless times, but rarely has this mission been as entertaining and funny as in this game, with other Star-Lord and Guardians of the Galaxy.

When we launched Guardians of the Galaxy, we didn’t expect a result like the one you can read in the block above. The lead time was far from ideal: The game comes after a disappointing year for Marvel’s The Avengers and managed to make a slight impression during its gameplay session earlier this fall. The game felt cumbersome and slow. The gameplay did manage to entertain us a bit and we had some fun things to do, but shall we say we were confident about it? new. That was partially unfair, because The Avengers were made by Crystal Dynamics and had a completely different, co-op-oriented approach. Guardians of the Galaxy is a single player game primarily developed by Eidos Montréal with the help of several other Square Enix studios. The difference in the end result so much from The Avengers is explainable, but it’s also very nice.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a third-person action game in which you play as Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord, the unprecedented leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This group also consists of the extremely strong and dry Drax the Destroyer, the highly skilled killer – and Thanos’ daughter – Gamora, a genetically modified Rocket raccoon, and his best friend, the living tree Groot. The franchise has been around since 1969, but it had a different configuration at that time. In 2008, the franchise was launched by Marvel Reboot A new combination was selected. This group also became known to non-comic readers when The Guardians joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, after which they also played a role in The Avengers: Endgame. However, this game is based on the comic series that started in 2008. This has consequences for the development of the characters – the heroes are not like movie stars from the movies – but also in terms of other characters you might expect in the story.

We intentionally don’t make it any more obvious than that, because the story is one of the most important aspects of this game. While many games have other irons of fire, such as the multiplayer mode or the co-op mode, the strength of the story and the connection to the characters are the main thing that will keep players glued to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Fortunately, this works great. The game tells a good story and in particular ensures that players feel connected to Peter Quill and his teammates.

The adventure begins when the Guardians are about to enter the forbidden quarantine zone, to search for a monster that can bring in a lot of money. However, everything is going wrong. Not only do the Rangers encounter an alarming alien creature, they narrowly escape the area and are met by the Nova Corps as soon as they’re out. While visiting the Nova Corps ship, Peter meets his old love, Nova Corps Captain Ko-Rel and his 12-year-old daughter, which naturally raises a lot of questions. There’s also less pleasant news: Heaven’s Guardians have been fined. So the next task is to come up with something from which to earn a load of credits. That leads The Guardians to Lady Hellbender, who want to get some credits with their trick. Apart from the fact that such a procedure is rarely without consequences, it soon becomes clear that there are even bigger problems. When the Guardians return to the Nova Corps base, the base turns out to be deserted. Next, the Rangers encounter soldiers apparently under the influence of a strange force that seems to want to take over the entire universe.
