The number of large data centers operated by hyperscale providers increased to 700 in the third quarter. The United States accounts for 49% of the capacity of these data centers, which is measured by the critical information technology burden.
This is clear from the statistics of the Synergy Research Group. While the U.S. role in global capacity has been declining, the recent decline has been slow to one point a year. Next to the United States, China is the largest contributor to the HyperScale data center capability. Asian country is 15% of the total. The remaining capacity is spread across the APAC region (13%), the EMEA region (19%) and Canada / Latin America (4%).
Capacity grows faster than the number of hyper scalars
As the number of hyper scale data centers has grown rapidly, the total capacity of all hyper scale data centers has grown rapidly as the average data center capacity has increased. In five years, the number of hyperscale data centers has doubled. However, it took less than four years to double the capacity.
The research is based on an analysis of data center traces by 19 of the world’s largest cloud and Internet service providers. These include the largest operators in SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, search, social networking, e-commerce and gaming. The companies with the largest data center footprint are the leading cloud providers: Amazon, Microsoft, Google and IBM. There are 60 or more data center locations with at least three locations in each of the four regions of North America, APAC, EMEA and Latin America. Oracle, Alibaba and Tencent have significant presence in the data center. Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Facebook are leading the way in terms of data center capability. However, Chinese hyperscale is growing rapidly, especially in Bite Dance, Alibaba and Tencent.
Not all data centers are born equal
“While the number of hyperscale data centers continues to grow at an impressive rate, not all data centers are born equal,” said John Dinstale, chief analyst at Synergy Research Group. “In general, proprietary data centers are much larger than leased data centers and Hyperscale’s home centers are larger than international facilities, although there are many exceptions to these trends. We also see the most healthy pipeline of hyperscale data centers being planned, improved or provided to support our strong five year growth forecasts.
