The second edition of Peloton Parkinson leaves tomorrow in Eupen and arrives in Ostend on Sunday. The initiative aims to raise more awareness about Parkinson’s disease and raise funds for scientific research.
Yvo De Bishop, president of Stop Parkinson and a Parkinson’s patient, is travelling around 400 kilometres along the Dutch border with other cyclists to draw attention to the brain disorder. The cyclists’ stages take them through Delsen, Hoogstraten, Keldrecht and Maldgem. In 2020, the bishop cycled across Belgium to raise €1 million for research, and two years ago he cycled across the country.
Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing brain disorder worldwide, says Stop Parkinson. By 2040, 120,000 Belgians will suffer from it, and according to the organization, to date there is no treatment available that can slow or cure the disease.
Stop Parkinson’s supports a number of studies focusing on, among other things, genetics and stem cell research. The campaign can be supported via the organization’s website.
