Being a gamer who grew up in the 90s, I have fond memories of the 3D platformer game. Even though my love for the medium didn’t come until my later years, I still felt nostalgic for games like Spyro, Super Mario 64, and Crash Bandicoot. That’s why I start a title like this every now and then.

A Rat’s Quest, a title from THQ Nordic subsidiary HandyGames, is just such a game; A light and cheerful title with a main character that could be in a cartoon. So when the employee who oversaw our play session told me they were going to use the Disney tune, I wasn’t entirely surprised.

More than this is shown is the story. The mouse Matt, whose research we follow, falls in love with a mouse named Nat. This is a biological issue, but since we want to make it kid-friendly, we don’t think too much about it. The obstacle to this game is their situation. The mouse is a beloved inhabitant of mankind and is a pet that must be taken care of, while the rat is insects that one would probably prefer to eliminate. It was called a misrepresentation on Romeo and Juliet during our visit, in reference to the love that couldn’t have been.

Our couple doesn’t let this stop them and they come up with a plan to escape the house together. Before that, Matt finds himself outside the walls on his own and must find a way to get back to his lover, while experiencing firsthand just how dangerous the outside world can be.

For young and old

What both the collaborator and previewer showed us is that A Rat’s Quest is a title that a wide audience will enjoy. Combat and platforming are two alternatives, with a clear focus on the latter. The game is full of stories and, according to the fact sheet, has more than two hundred cinematics with professional level voiceover. This makes it fun for even the smallest gamers in the house, who can simply enjoy the funny creature on screen and the videos playing all the time. And when they are a few years older, they can even challenge her, if necessary, with a little help from mom and dad.

anticipation

My first encounter with A Rat’s Quest was very fleeting, but positive. Magic is strewn across the screen and I can’t wait to get to grips with the game myself. However, when that will be possible, remains a mystery.
