Smart traffic lights should improve green times and ensure smoother traffic | the interior

Flemish Mobildata began using a new cloud platform on Tuesday. This was reported by the Roads and Traffic Agency. In the future, the platform should connect smart traffic lights in Flanders and thus enable the exchange of information with road users.

In the long term, the TLEX® (Traffic Live Exchange) platform exchanges millions of road user data per minute via mobility applications with the goal of improving traffic, but also safer and more environmentally friendly. Flanders wants to have around 250 smart traffic lights activated by the end of 2023. Roads and Traffic already wants to start using a number of smart traffic lights for first apps this fall.

Thanks to the intelligent interchange of data, smart traffic lights will adapt to the current traffic situation, thus often unnecessarily red. Due to the smoother flow and less unnecessary acceleration of cars and trucks, there will also be fewer emissions, which will benefit the environment. In addition to the improved green times, priority will be given to road users such as emergency and emergency services, allowing them to reach their destination safer and faster.

Roads and Traffic has joined forces for the new system with Be-Mobile, the smart mobility service provider headquartered in Ghent. The company develops high-tech solutions in the areas of intelligent mobility, traffic control and management, and traffic information. Be-Mobile heads the Mobildata consortium and works with the Dutch company Monotch, developer of the TLEX® platform.
