Landslides and mudslides have been reported in Sicily, the Civil Protection tweeted. In Calabria and Puglia there are floods and hurricanes.

In addition, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday morning in the Lipari Islands between Sicily and Calabria. The earthquake did not cause any damage.

In Ischia, hundreds of residents spent Friday and Saturday nights with relatives or in hotels. They were brought to safety on Friday because the authorities could not guarantee that the new downpour would not trigger more landslides.

The Italian Meteorological Service expects the bad weather to move north.
