The ashes of Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, who died in July, will go to space.
Her cremated remains will be aboard the first Celestes Voyager Memorial space flight, which will take off from Cape Canaveral. Celestis, Inc. is a private company that operates commemorative spaceflights. This is CNN reports.
Other deceased Star TrekAlso on board were the ashes of Jane Roddenberry and his wife, Magel Barrett Roddenberry, who played several roles in the series, and James Doohan who played Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.
Nichols’ ashes in space
Nichols, a first lieutenant. Nyota Oora starred in the original series and six films, she died on July 30 at the age of 89. She was the only black character on the series during the civil rights era of the 1960s.
It also helped recruit some of the first female and minority astronauts in the United States in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The spaceflight will travel through NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and enter deep interplanetary space.
