Next month, the Egyptian government will begin moving to the country’s new capital, 45 kilometers east of Cairo. This was announced by a representative of the Presidential Palace, Wednesday.
The new administrative capital, which has been under construction since 2015 and has no name yet, is one of the exhibits in a series of mega projects for Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Earlier this year, Sisi, who has been in power since 2014, said the opening of the new capital would herald the birth of a new republic in Egypt.
Presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in a press statement that Sisi ordered the government to move its offices to a government district in the new capital, starting next December. The new capital will also include parliament, business district, airport and a large public park. The largest tower in Africa will also be built.
Government officials say that once the capital is ready, it will relieve pressure on Old Cairo. With its population of 6.5 million, that city is densely populated.
