Yanukovych was impeached in 2014 during protests by pro-Western demonstrators. Since then, the 72-year-old former president has been living in exile in Russia. In his homeland, he was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison for high treason. He recently said that President Volodymyr Zelensky should surrender in the war against Russia. “You are personally obligated to stop the bloodshed and reach a peace agreement at any cost. Yanukovych was previously on the EU sanctions list. But in June 2021, the EU court overturned the sanctions against Yanukovych because it was not clear whether justice in Ukraine would properly deal with the president who had fled to Russia.
