The first day of the mandatory corona permit in the Netherlands: the application was immediately overloaded due to crowds and cyber-attack abroad

UpdateCoronacheck, through which the Dutch can access, among other things, the catering industry from today, has problems. Several people on social media reported that they were unable to login for this reason. According to the Ministry of Health, this is due to so-called DdoS attacks on servers, which overload the system. Many people are also using the app for the first time. This makes QR code generation difficult.

According to a spokeswoman for the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports (VWS), DdoS (distributed denial of service) attacks, in which cybercriminals try to shut down websites by overloading them with Internet traffic, have been taken into account in progress. “We can eliminate them very well,” the spokeswoman said. At about 10 p.m., the crowds thinned out again.

The problems with the app occurred mainly in people who had not yet generated a QR code or who had not used the app for a month, forcing it to reconnect to the server. If you already have a QR code, you can show it offline.

“double punch”

However, the problems caused grumbling among catering entrepreneurs, with a large portion of them against the QR code commitment at all. In the Netherlands, a Corona ticket is mandatory from this weekend for everyone aged 13 or over in some places, for example in the food industry, at an event, a sports competition or a cultural performance.

Dirk Belgarts, general manager of Koninklijk Horeca Nederland (KHN), reports that there are queues in front of coffee shops in various parts of the country. Belgarts, speaking of a ‘double whammy’ for the food industry, says people who want to get tested will also have trouble getting a coronavirus test on time or close to home. KHN is also skeptical about Corona Corridor, and instead wants the whole community to open again, without restrictions.

Restaurant closed due to lack of QR code verification

In Nijmegen, eastern Holland, things went wrong on the first day. The municipality closed a restaurant there due to the lack of verification of the Corona card. The director will go to court against this decision. The case will be heard on Sunday morning.

patience

In addition to DDoS attacks, they are also busy, according to the ministry. “It is busy at the moment due to people generating a QR code for the first time and by people who open the app for the first time in weeks. Issued QR codes are updated every 28 days, due to safety regulations.”

It is recommended that people who are experiencing issues with the app be patient and try again later. But this is not an option for everyone. Anyone who goes to the football field or the cinema has to deal with fixed start times.

The spokesperson says the problems will not persist, as many people are now provided with a code that is valid for four weeks. However, it is wiser to collect the token before leaving, and not wait until you are in line somewhere.

FM Separation

In general, the first day that the already controversial Corona Corridor is entered will not pass without a hitch. Earlier today, there was a great deal of uproar over Foreign Minister Mona Keizer’s comments in telegraph. She publicly criticized this measure. This cost her her job. Prime Minister Mark Rutte dismissed Keijzer from the government a few hours later.
