The Secretary-General of the United Nations denounces the greed of the major oil and gas companies: “It is immoral that they are making record profits at the expense of the poor and at the expense of the climate” | Abroad

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday denounced the “greed” of major oil and gas companies that are making record profits at the expense of the poor as a result of the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

“It is unethical for oil and gas companies to achieve record profits at the expense of the poorest people and communities and at the expense of the climate,” Guterres said at a news conference following the publication of the third report. The United Nations Report on the Global Climate Crisis, Consequences of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. He called on all governments to “tax these excessive profits and use resources to support the most vulnerable in these difficult times.”

The Secretary-General estimates that multinational oil and gas companies generated nearly $100 billion in profits in the first quarter of 2022. In the second quarter, companies such as BP, ExxonMobile, Chevron, Shell and TotalEnergies posted huge profits as a result of higher oil and gas prices.

“I call on all people to send a clear message to the fossil fuel industry and its supporters that this appalling greed is punishing the poorest and most vulnerable and destroying our one common home, the planet,” Guterres said.
