She and Vladimir Putin continue to deny that they are romantically linked, but former gymnast Alina Kabaeva, 39, has long been considered the Russian president’s mistress. Either way, she has ties to the Kremlin: Kabaeva is a former member of the State Duma (the Russian parliament) and currently heads the pro-Moscow news empire, the National Media Committee.

After the United Kingdom previously imposed sanctions on Khabewa, the United States is now following suit. For example, all of Khabeeva’s American assets are frozen, and Americans are not allowed to do business with him.

The sanctions against Kabaeva are part of a new effort by the Biden administration to punish the Russian elite for the ongoing war in Ukraine. Several oligarchs, a major steel producer and a financial institution were also targeted.
