The world’s smallest battery invented: “Not bigger than a grain of salt” | iHLN

German and Chinese scientists have designed the smallest battery ever. A microscopic battery is smaller than a square millimeter. The goal is to be used in medical implants and precision robotics.

An international team designed the battery in the shape of a Swiss roll. This way no capacity of energy is wasted. It appears that “after wrapping the battery, the available chip area is efficiently used to house a small, fully integrated, three-dimensional system”. With the traditional technique of stacking small parts, this was much more difficult.

The end result is a rechargeable battery that can power small computers for 10 hours. At the moment, no price has been placed on the invention and the battery will not be offered for sale anywhere. “There is still huge potential to improve this technology and we can expect much more powerful micro-batteries in the future,” said Professor Oliver Schmidt from Chemnitz University of Technology.

Longest battery

At the end of last year, American scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made the longest battery in the world. Its length was about 140 meters, and according to the researchers, it could theoretically be up to one kilometer long. For example, a lithium-ion battery can be used to 3D print electronics.
