Angry motorists and construction workers drove protesters off the road at the bridge itself, even before the police arrived. The driver is also said to have encouraged other road users to “drive over them”. British media footage shows protesters sitting on the road outside the Black Wall Tunnel. An emotional woman asks them to make room as she is going to the hospital where her mother is admitted.
London police found the protests disproportionate and arrested nearly 40 protesters for disrupting traffic. The group has also previously blocked traffic on a busy highway near London and the port of Dover. Insulate Britain is asking the government to come up with a plan to isolate tens of millions of homes. This would result in lower energy bills and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
Continuous traffic obstacles are a thorn in the side of the authorities. The government has already announced tougher penalties for people blocking highways. The working group said it was not affected. A Reuters spokesperson told Reuters he feared the social consequences of the climate crisis more than he feared a prison sentence.
