A federal judge in the state of Louisiana on Friday blocked the US government’s decision to end the ‘stay in Mexico’ rule. Because of this controversial law, which the United States and Mexico agreed to in 2020, people in Mexico must in principle wait to apply for asylum in the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice has said it will appeal the court ruling.
Former President Donald Trump has introduced legislation to protect public health in the United States during corona virus outbreaks. However, current President Joe Biden decided earlier that month that the argument was no longer valid and would repeal the law on May 23.
A group of more than 20 Republican governors went to court after Biden decided to uphold the law. They fear that immigrants will come in large numbers. The judge ruled in their favor on Friday and signed the verdict keeping the law in place.
The decision comes amid uncertainty over whether thousands of immigrants from Mexico’s border cities will be able to apply for asylum in the United States on Monday. A group of immigrants gathered outside the US embassy in Tijuana to express their concerns.
About 1.8 million immigrants and asylum seekers have been rapidly expelled from the United States since the law was introduced.
