Two Chinese intelligence officers wanted to bribe a US official to get inside information about a criminal case against the Chinese telecom company Huawei. Prosecutors also revealed charges against four other Chinese nationals.
“This was a blatant attempt by Chinese intelligence officers to protect a company from liability and to undermine the integrity of our judicial system,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a news conference unveiling the charges. It will be Chinese intelligence officers Guochun He and Zheng Wang. They tried to steal the prosecutor’s memo, witness lists and other classified evidence.
The charges against the two refer only to a “Chinese telecommunications company”. According to a source familiar with the case, it is Huawei. This Chinese telecom company was indicted in 2020 for violating the Racketeer Affected and Corrupt Organizations Act.
According to the indictment, the Chinese agents bribed a US government official who they believed was recruited to work for the Chinese government, but in fact he was working as a double agent for the FBI. The double agent provided Chinese agents with documents that appeared to contain useful information. In fact, these documents were prepared by the judiciary and do not contain any new information.
Garland also announced during the press conference that four other Chinese are charged in connection with the Huawei investigation.
