“US forces successfully launched an offensive in northern Syria, killing both Abu-Hashum al-Umawi (…) and another senior IS official,” it said. “This attack will destabilize the region and weaken IS’s ability to attack our troops and partners,” General Michel Guerrilla said.
The US military also assures that “no civilians were killed or injured during this operation” according to the information it received. Also, no American troops were injured and no American equipment was damaged.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, US forces had already killed another IS leader in a helicopter operation in northeastern Syria.
Despite defeats in Iraq in 2017 and Syria in 2019, the US continues to target the jihadist group’s leadership, which continues to carry out attacks through dormant cells in both countries.
