Von der Leyen denies switching to NATO: ‘Unfounded speculation’ | outside

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen denied that she plans to go to the NATO summit. A spokesman for the commission described the reports in some media as “baseless speculation”.

The British newspaper “The Sun” reported that the former German defense minister was a candidate to succeed NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. His term was recently extended due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, but it will end at the end of September. Stoltenberg dismissed reports in February of a possible further extension of his term. The Norwegian has led the coalition since the end of 2014.

Usually, behind the scenes, the thirty member states of the coalition reach a consensus on who will be in charge. The Commander-in-Chief of the Army is usually American, and the Secretary General is usually from one of the other member states.
