“We are not part of this conflict,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in response to Ukraine’s request. Nor does NATO send troops into the country.
In a televised speech on Friday evening, Zelensky said that the military coalition, by refusing to give Russia a “green light” to continue bombing Ukrainian towns and cities, had failed.
The decision against the no-fly zone was made during an emergency meeting of NATO’s 30 foreign ministers on the war in Ukraine. Zelensky described the meeting in his speech as “a weak and confusing NATO summit. A summit at which it was clear that not everyone saw the fight for Europe’s freedom as a priority.”
