Emma Plasschaert has already become world champion twice, in 2018 and 2021, but she has never won European gold. She won the bronze medal in 2018 and 2019.
Plasschaert had already announced before the European Championships in Hyères that she would not achieve a result. The World Cup, where she got the bronze medal, was her main goal, and the European Championship was already a good testing moment with a view to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
However, Plasschaert still overlooked the podium at the start of the final day with fourth place. But the 29-year-old from Ostend finished ninth in Fleet Gold in the last test. However, she had to give up another position.
Plasschaert closes the competition with 55 points. This number is 11 more than Poland’s Agata Barwinska, who extended her European title. And she beat Swiss Maud Gaet (48 points) and Dutch Marit Baumeister (50 points), with 44 points. Britain’s Matilda Nichols (52 points) came fourth.
Eline Verstraelen finished 60th after a 19th-place finish in the final Silver Fleet race.
William De Smet took two more poles on the final day at ILCA 7 (formerly Laser). He ended up in 17th place with 100 points. And Anis van Laer fell from 45 to 53. Cypriot Pavlos Contide won the European title (32 points), ahead of Briton Michael Beckett (34 points) and Finn Carli Tapper (50 points).
